Ecuador Earthquake Information

For all those concerned and who want to help, please read this information on the situation in Ecuador, following the major earthquake which occurred on 16th April 2016.

1. On 16th April, at 18h58, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude hit the coastal regions of Ecuador.

2. The earthquake was felt across the majority of Ecuador as well as in the south of Colombia. There have been hundreds of aftershocks recorded.

3. The regions of Ecuador which have registered extensive damage are the coastal provinces of Esmeraldas and Manabi, including the cities of Manta and Portoviejo.

4. There were over 600 confirmed deaths and over 4000 people injured as a result of the earthquake.

5. Manta airport (on the coast) was initially closed, it is now open with limited services. All other airports in the country are functioning as normal.

6. Donations of water, non-perishable food, blankets, basic medicines, insect repellent, etc. are being accepted in donation centres across the country. If you are currently visiting Ecuador and want to donate you will be able to find out where and how at your hotel.

7. For those of you who want to help from afar we recommend that you donate through the Ecuadorian Red Cross who are on the ground in the affected communities providing search and rescue operations, medical support and shelter for victims
