Palm Sunday in Pictures - Quito 2014

Sunday, 13 April 2014 23:49

Palm Sunday is always an important day of the year among Ecuador's predominantly Catholic society. Walking through the streets of Quito today there was a wonderfully vibrant and colourful atmosphere, with music and prayer filling the air. Here are some of the photos we took along the way.

A procession of Palm Sunday worshippers walk and sing, following the cross and holding their palm fronds on high, as they pass the Basilica in Quito.

'Bouquets' of palm fronds and other greenery are put together by hand on the street by the local sellers, ready to be purchased by worshippers before they go into Mass.

Families choose from a vast array of palm decorations that are on offer. They take them into the churches to be blessed during Mass. The palm decorations are then taken back to their homes.

These ecological 'ramos', made from woven recycled newspaper and rosemary, were on sale in the traditional market on San Francisco Plaza.

Palm Sunday worhsippers take part in an outdoor Mass service - San Francisco Plaza, Quito.

The costumes, including the purple attire of the Cucuruchos, which will be used in next week's 'Jesus del Gran Poder' procession, are displayed on the streets for passers-by to enjoy a close up look.

Along the Street of the Seven Crosses, each cross has been decorated with beautiful floral displays as part of Quito's Easter celebrations, this one is outside La Iglesia de la Concepcion.

Here is the florally decorated cross outside Quito's Cathedral.

And a beautiful red and purple floral display adorns the cross outside Quito's La Compania de Jesus Church.
